- Persevere to Become a Movie Actor
Be prepared to work
hard. It takes some stick-to-it-tiredness and perseverance to make it in the
movie business. It's not just your average everyday nine-to-five job. You need
to be knocking down doors, sending out headshots, calling on agents. Still
interested?
- Take Acting Classes to Become a Movie Actor
Then it's time to
master your craft, and acting is a craft. And movie acting is a specific craft.
You'll want to take classes and workshops with people who are experienced in
movie acting. Taking the time to master their craft is something that even the
most famous Hollywood actors are still doing. They need to keep relevant, keep
on the top of their game, and so do you.
- Have a Headshot and Resume to Become a Movie Actor
Next, you'll need a
professional headshot and resume. It's very unprofessional to show up at an
audition or to an agent's office without these integral pieces of paper. What
about people who don't have much to put on a resume? You need to build up that
resume and not necessarily in the movie business. It could be commercials,
student films, theater work, anything to show that you're an actor -- that
you're a working actor -- and that you're ready to work in the movies.
- Find an Agent to Become a Movie Actor
If you're looking
for an agent, agents usually find their clients in one of three ways: their
referrals from other people such as directors and actors -- people in the biz.
Or number two: they're sought out, they're actors who are already on the scene
and they're somewhat established, and the agent is knocking down their door.
The third way that agents find their clients is by discovering them. We've all
heard that story about someone being discovered at a mall, at a talent showcase
or perhaps on the set of a student film.
And be wary of
agents who are asking for money up front. There are plenty of scammers up
there. Why would an agent who got their money up front be working hard to find
you jobs if they have already gotten their share?
- Try Background Work to Become a Movie Actor
Take advantage of
background work, or what's commonly known as being an "extra." An
extra in a film may or may not get a lot of screen time, but they will get a
valuable insight into the movie business. You'll see how the cameras work, how
the staff works, and what happens on a professional movie set.
- Join SAG to Become a Movie Actor
And consider
becoming a member of SAG, the Screen Actors Guild. Famous actors all the way
down to little unknowns like yourself are members of the Screen Actors Guild.
